When the Peachtree City 487 office was opened in 1976, that office was considered part of the "Fayetteville Exchange" but you had to dial "8" to reach it from Fayetteville.

Some time between 1985 and 1988 the step-by-step equipment was replaced with No. 5 ESS equipment.

digit number. To call all other Atlanta metro area numbers, dial "8" before the number.

In 1977, these calls were being routed via the East Point ESS.

Hampton was one of the last Step-by-Step offices to be converted. Some time between late 1986 and 1988, the step equipment was replaced by digital switching equipment. At that time, the "8" access code for Atlanta would have been eliminated.

Jonesboro

(770) 471 478

107 Smith St, Jonesboro
Around 1960, the office was opened. The equipment was No. 5 Crossbar and the code was 478. Some conflicting information shows that this office could have been opened in the late 1950s with an office name of "Greenleaf-8".

On October 2, 1960, Jonesboro was added to the Atlanta metro calling area. To call all Atlanta metro numbers, you dialed the 7 digit number.

Some time in the 1960s, the second prefix 471 was added.

Around 1980, the crossbar equipment was retired and No. 1A ESS was installed.

In 1997, the office is No. 5 ESS.

Locust Grove

(unknown address)
This office no longer exists.
Some time prior to 1963, the office opened. The equipment was Step-by-Step.

In 1963, Locust Grove was added to the Atlanta metro calling area and given 7-digit dialing with the code 956.
To call Locust Grove 956 numbers and probably McDonough 957 numbers, you dialed the 7 digit number. To call all other Atlanta metro numbers, you dialed "8" or some other access code before the number.

Some time before 1976, the Locust Grove office was removed from service. All telephone numbers were changed to 957 and served out of the McDonough office.

McDonough

(770) 957

61 Griffin St, McDonough
The office was opened some time before 1963 as a Community Dial Office using a 355A Step-by-Step machine. Dialing was probably on a 4-digit basis.

In 1963, McDonough was added to the Atlanta metro calling area. Telephone numbers were changed to 7-digits with a prefix of 957.

The McDonough office also acted as a switching point for calls from Atlanta to Locust Grove. The McDonough and Locust Grove office codes both started with "95". When calls were placed from Atlanta to McDonough or Locust Grove using the Atlanta step-by-step tandem in the Auburn Avenue building, the call was switched to McDonough on "95". Then if the third digit was "6" the McDonough office switched the call to the Locust Grove 956 office. If the third digit was "7", the call stayed in the McDonough office. This practice was discontinued in the 1970s when the Powers Ferry 953 office was placed in service.

Dialing instructions in 1976 were as follows:

To call Stockbridge 474 numbers, Jonesboro 478 numbers, Hampton 946 numbers, McDonough 957 numbers, and Griffin 227 numbers, dial the 7 digit number. To call all other Atlanta
metro area numbers, dial "8" before the number.

In 1984, the step-by-step equipment was replaced with DMS-100 equipment. This may have been the first digital central office in the Atlanta metro area.

Morrow

6203 Jonesboro Rd, Morrow GA
The Morrow office opened in around 1970. The switching equipment used was No. 5 Crossbar. The first prefix was 961. The crossbar equipment remained in service until at least the middle of 1986, when it was replaced with DMS-100.

6059 Riverdale Rd, Riverdale, GA
The Riverdale office was opened around 1974. The equipment used was 1A-ESS. The first prefix was 996.

In May of 2001, the 1A ESS equipment was replaced with No. 5 ESS.

Stockbridge

(770) 474

5061 N. Henry Blvd, Stockbridge GA
Some time prior to 1960, the Stockbridge Community Dial Office was placed in service using a 355A Step-by-Step machine. Dialing would have probably been on a 4-digit basis.

On October 2, 1960, Stockbridge was added to the Atlanta metro calling area. Telephone numbers were changed to 7-digits with the prefix 474.

Dialing instructions in 1976 were as follows:

To call Stockbridge 474 numbers and McDonough 957 numbers, dial the 7 digit number. To call all other Atlanta metro area numbers, dial "8" before the number.
